Located directly in front of your ears on both sides of your head is the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Responsible for connecting your jaw to your temporal bone, the TMJ is essential for proper biting, chewing, speaking, and yawning. Sometimes, for multiple reasons, the TMJ becomes damaged; this is referred to as TMJ dysfunction or disorder. TMD is characterized by multiple symptoms, including:

  • Jaw or facial pain
  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when you open your mouth
  • Difficulty opening your mouth wide
  • A locked jaw
  • Ear pain, or ringing in the ears
  • Tight or tired jaw muscles
  • Frequent tension headaches or migraines
  • Pain in the neck or shoulders
  • Improper bite, leading to very worn teeth

Once a TMD diagnosis has been made, our talented oral surgeon, Dr. Knoll, will begin creating a custom plan for TMJ treatment in Alameda, California. For less serious cases, a mouth guard is often created to limit teeth grinding and gently align your jaw in a proper position. For a more permanent solution, realignment may be suggested. Realignment involves adjusting the relationship between the upper and lower teeth and how they fit together. Dental restorations are often used in this case. As with any treatment, we will work hard to determine what is best for you and your smile.
